VentureClub is a great place to work for many reasons - the feeling of community, the amazing desks, the free snacks; however, our favourite reason is being located right in vibrant downtown Kingston.

Whether you are looking for something to do on your lunch break or making plans for after work, with beautiful scenery to take in on a walk, over 700 stores and restaurants, and several museums and art galleries all within walking distance of our offices there is always something new and interesting to check out.

We have highlighted a few local, independent businesses that we recommend visiting the next time you go out shopping or are looking for something to do:

Trailhead has been outfitting people for their outdoor adventures for over 25 years. As a locally owned and operated shop, they love getting to know their customers and supporting the local community. They rent stand up paddle boards, kayaks, camping equipment, snowshoes, cross country skis, and skates.

Trailhead offers kayak and stand up paddle board lessons and host a Paddle and a Pint evening. This is a great way to spend an evening and learn a new activity, get some exercise, and meet new people.

Undr is a unique one stop shop for men. They offer a selection of underwear, socks, loungewear, swimwear, robes, skin care, beard card, and shaving products. Their products range from locally sourced to coming from as far away as Japan. A trip to Undr is a great way to treat yourself or find the perfect gift.

Modern Primitive

Modern Primitive is a local boutique that has been servicing Kingston since 1991. They carry all sorts of interesting trinkets, jewellery, clothing, and more from far off places. This is one of the more interesting and unique stores in downtown Kingston, make sure to check it out and see what treasures you can find.

Minotaur is your downtown destination for board games, novelties, crafting supplies, and handmade gifts. They offer free game nights every Sunday and Thursday evenings and weekly craft workshops, making Minotaur a one stop destination for fun.

Chris James

Chris James brings the latest collections in men’s and women’s clothing from fashion brands around the world. This full service fashion boutique has been servicing Kingston since 2010 and offers one-on-one customer care, wardrobe development and consultation, tailoring, custom cut orders, and private shopping.

Improbable Escapes

Improbable Escapes is Kingston’s original escape room experience. Get together with a few friends and see if you can solve a series of puzzles to escape the room before time expires. You can also do it with your colleagues for a great team building experience.

Improbable Escapes has grown to offer four different indoor escape rooms, two outdoors, and are constantly partnering with museums and historic sites around town to offer pop-up experiences, so there is always a new challenge for you to take on.

The Screening Room

The Screen Room is Kingston’s downtown independent movie theatre. They play all kinds of movies on their 3 screens, but specialize in art-house, indie, foreign, and classic cinema.

Brian’s Record Option

Brian’s Record Option is a Kingston institution, dating back over 30 years. They buy, sell, and trade new or used records, tapes, CDs, posters, sheet music, DVDs, VHSs, and more. Don’t be intimidated when you first walk in, as Brian doesn’t subscribe to a standard system of organization, but if you talk to him he is guaranteed to know where everything is. Next time you are looking for a classic album make sure to make this your first stop.

Novel Idea

Novel Idea, Kingston’s independent bookstore, is downtown Kingston’s go to spot for fiction and non-fiction books, including hard to find titles by local authors. If the book you are looking for is not in stock they are always happy to place a special order for you.

The Rocking Horse

The Rocking Horse has been wowing kids and their parents in downtown Kingston since 2001. Offering everything from the craziest must have new toys to the retro and classic, they will help you find the perfect gift (or something for yourself if you are feeling a little nostalgic).

These are only a few highlights of the businesses that can be found only minutes from each of our downtown locations, but there are so many other amazing places to check out and get lost in. Being this close to the vibrant downtown community that is full of so many cool and unique places is part of what makes working at VentureClub an amazing experience.
